OPERA APERTA, Countless Cities, Biennial of the City of the World", Farm Cultural Park, Favara, Sicily.
2023
Opera Aperta is an installation presented for the first time at Countless Cities, Biennial of the City of the World (June 23, 2023 – January 28, 2024) at Farm Cultural Park, in Favara, Sicily—one of the most significant examples of culture-led urban regeneration in Italy.
Designed together with Beatrice Fontana and Frank Dittmann, Opera Aperta introduces a Swiss architectural reference through the Baugespanne, a temporary construction device traditionally used in Switzerland to visualize the volume and scale of a building before its realization.
Removed from its original regulatory and functional context, the Baugespanne is transformed into a spatial installation. Decontextualized and stripped of its instrumental role, it reveals its inherent sculptural quality by occupying, cutting through, and reconfiguring the exhibition spaces of Palazzo Miccichè.
By intervening directly in the architectural fabric of the venue, Opera Aperta challenges conventional distinctions between built and unbuilt, temporary and permanent, regulatory device and sculptural form. The installation invites viewers to reconsider spatial relationships and perceptual hierarchies, opening a localized discourse on the impact of architecture, regulation, and absence within the urban environment.
Displace - The project displaces the Baugespanne from its regulatory and functional context, transforming a technical construction device into a spatial and conceptual object.
Expose - Opera Aperta exposes the latent sculptural and spatial qualities of a normally invisible architectural tool, making explicit the processes that precede construction.
Activate - The installation activates the exhibition space and its audience by prompting reflection on the relationship between built and unbuilt environments, regulation, and spatial imagination within a specific urban context.
