JERICHO ROSE.
Modular Event Infrastructure for Festspiele Zurich.

Year: 2020
Project Type: Installation
Location: Zurich
Commissioned by: Zurich Festspiele

Author: Antonio Scarponi

Jericho Rose is an event concept developed to engage the public during the Festspiele Zurich. The project is based on a system of mobile and modular grandstands designed to operate at multiple scales and configurations.

The modules can be assembled to form a temporary arena capable of hosting concerts, theatre performances, and public gatherings. When disassembled, the same elements function as independent urban furniture, activating the surrounding space through informal use. Beneath the grandstands, the structure accommodates workshops, temporary stores, and support programs related to the festival.
Thanks to their expandability, the grandstands generate a dynamic spatial condition. When deployed, they create a layered shadow play that recalls the opening structure of a Jericho Rose. From below, this spatial effect reflects and dialogues with Prisca Baumann’s mirrored zeppelin installation, establishing a visual relationship between architecture, light, and performance.

Displace - Jericho Rose displaces the original formulation of the problem posed by the festival.
Rather than designing a fixed venue or a single event space, the project reframes the question as a system of conditions for public involvement, proposing a modular infrastructure capable of adapting to multiple uses, temporalities, and scales.

Activate - The project activates public space through use and assembly. By functioning both as an arena and as dispersed urban furniture, Jericho Rose enables continuous engagement before, during, and beyond scheduled events.
