TOI_Things of Internet. Graphic Templates for DIY Leaflets

Everything that has happened over the last 20 years of Internet is now happening in the real world. We navigate across the Earth’s surface and have the ability to tag, save, comment and share the places we live in, as we would do with a website we enjoy. Everything in the world is interconnected, like internet html pages are with one another.

TOI is a system of graphic templates for do-it-yourself leaflets designed for Vestire i Paesaggi, and used as an archival tool for territorial cultural activities. For TOI, the territory itself is the archive. TOI’s graphic templates use two types of tags: analog tags (shelf marks that define categories of intervention) and digital tags (sematags that resolve into multimedia contents and augment the information of things and places related, providing access to online archival documentation).

Booklets, postcards, headed papers, posters are designed to be printed on the back of A4 already used paper. TOI graphic templates are downloadable as SVG and as PDF and distributed under Creative Commons license.

25/05/10 Trampolines Opening (cocktail party) @ 18.00

On the 26th of May we will open the Trampolines, an historical restaurant in Riccione, Italy. This will be the second biggest building with Corian® facades in Europe. The opening will celebrate the first tranche of a complex building that include a four stars suite hotel that will be opened in early 2011. The building is conceived as a Corian® shell that surrounds the building like a cloud. For the opening the restaurant and the first level of facade will be completed. Cocktail party starts at 18.00. Hope to see you there.

Italy Up in Smoke @ Milano Design Week

The Italian Constitution, if compared with the real country, looks like a subversive manifesto.

Italy up in Smoke is a project for the promotion of the Italian Constitution abroad. The articles (in English) are framed into the non smoking graphic policy of the European Community. Italy up in Smoke is a way to say basta. We want to let everyone know what our constitution say. We want to say it loud, we want to say it now and we want to say it to an international audience. It is time for designers to take a position.

Human World as cover for an India China Institute publication.

Many years ago (2001) I have made a collection of world maps where political and cultural information were displayed on a demographic basis. It came out what it is now the conceptual world picture that frame our office’s work. The project was titled Human World. The idea is that demographic boom is the frame in which contemporary society must be understood today. I have started to develop this work in the summer before 9/11. I believed that we were looking upon the world with the wrong lenses. With the wrong tools.

The first world map I have made was Internet users (2001). In this map each country was proportionally enlarged to the people connected to the net. The blue of the ocean was representing people non connected. I wanted to visualize how many people are actually connected to the net, how many people are able to produce, share and consume information. Today’s world is is a demographic world. People are able to communicate in real time even without spatial continuity. Each of us contributes to the production and consumption of the world broadcast. Each of us is a micro media. Accesses are the new boundaries of today’s world. The issue is who’s connected and who’s not and where the information out there is coming from. I have made many projects that where exploring this paradigm, speaking of the world as a human factor, and that’s what I am still doing.

Human World is a representation of the word from the point of view of the population. Each state is proportionally enlarged to their respective inhabitants. I have being showing issue like “how many people lives in democratic countries” or how many people lives in countries where the death penalty is enforced. In order to do so, I have “hacked” Alighiero Boetti‘s work. I wanted to update his world picture made of physical boundaries in order to introduce the human dimension.

I was asked to give the permission to use this map as a cover for a publication of the India China Institute at the New School, NYC. It made so much sense for the me to let the use of my work for this kind of publication. As architect I wanted to raise what I consider the main issue related to our times and use a picture to say that “times are a-changing” and to stop talking about the style of the chairs we keep designing. It is time to challenge our work as an idea of society and not as a formal principle.

A hoodie is not just a hoodie. In a world full of stuff, smart items should be transformable, editable. They should engage the possibility to be transformed into something else. We do not need a new object. We rather need to get rid of some of them, to reduce the complex network of things around us. Yökalenteri / Night Calendar (Rêvalités) @ Terra Infirma, ISCP, Brooklyn, NY

Yökalenteri means, in Finnish language, “Night Calendar”. A calendar that displays the minutes of night time in Helsinki throughout the year. Yökalenteri hosts “Rêvalités”, a work of Finnish Poet and writer Cia Rinne.”Rêvalités” consists of 36 mini prose pieces, dreams recorded during the time span of a year, which thematically deal with a variety of issues.

Yökalentari (Inkjet on paper 375×154 cm) will be on display at “Terra Infirma“, curated by Chiara Sartori, visiting curator at ISCP, NY. “Terra Infirma” gathers the works of six international renowned artists, exploring the ways in which a geographical context is able to affect emotions. Addressing feelings of melancholy and sorrow, the exhibition tentatively links attempts to interact with, modify and understand natural phenomena, landscapes and geographical codifications with the subtle and ephemeral emotional dimension of human existence.

Participating Artists: Rosa Barba, Laurent Grasso, Alban Hajdinaj, Marie Velardi.

Italia in fumo online show

Our project Italia in fumo will be exhibited online at “the word is yours“. Opening 15th of October at 00.00 until November 19th at 23.00. Care of Gaspare Caliri.

Italia in fumo is a project in collaboration with Peppe Clemente for the promotion of the Italian constitution. The articles are framed within the graphic appearance of the non smoking policy of the European Community. Italia in fumo means, in Italian, “Italy made of smoke” and “Italy is burning out”. Our intent is to claim the deep gap between the actual country and the beauty of its constitution. You can download DIY devices for “non smoking” Italian Constitution here.

Yeeeeeeeehh!!!

In the course of the Symposium “The Future of the Informal” at the 4th International Rotterdam Architecture Biennale (NAI Rotterdam) the winners of the Squatcity-Urbaninform Competition have been announced.

The winning projects and honorable mentions were selected by the Squatcity-Urbaninform Jury out of 60 entries in the categories: DESIGN (Space, Technology and Material), SOCIO-ECONOMICS (Participation and Empowerment) and POLITICS (Good Urban Governance). The Jury was composed of members of the IABR curatorial team: Tim Rieniets (IABR), Fabienne Hoelzl (IABR), Can Altay (IABR-Refuge), Michelle Provoost (IABR-Makable Society), Georgeen Theodore (IABR-Community), Stephen Cairns (IABR-Reciprocity), Bart Goldhoorn (IABR-Collective) and Rainer Hehl (IABR-Squat).

Our project RIKEA (a manual about how to make a free market set with Ikea re-assembled furniture) will take part at the International Architecture Biennale, Rotterdam 25 Sept - 10 Jan 2010. Our participation includes a prototype and a “mini” documentary that will be part of the Urbaninform platform.
